Gonakumbura Pangukarage Shalani Tharaka Wijayabandara, better known as Shalani Tharaka, entered the field of Arts after winning the Sirasa Kumariyapageant in 2007. She was just 17 when she won the beauty pageant.Her father is a businessman and her mother is a beautician. After receiving her primary education at the St. Agnes Convent in Balangoda, Shalani was later educated at theNewstead Girls College in Negambo.
She made her acting debut in Sherly P. Delankawala's drama Poojasanaya. She also appeared in several otherteledramas such as Isuru bawana, Hansi, Samanalee, Api Api Wage, Ganga Addara and Sanda Sanda Wage.
